Senator Harkin Keynote:
Disability Rights in America Past, Present and Future

Senator Tom Harkin’s keynote at getAwareLive! will focus on the evolution of disability rights in America over the past several decades.

The Senator will share stories from his experience co-authoring the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that was signed into law in 1990. He’ll discuss the current state of the ADA, including proposed changes. Finally, he’ll issue a call to action around improving employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

“Our goal is to double the labor force participation rate of people with disabilities around the world over the next 10 years,” Senator Harkin said in a press release announcing his participation at getAwareLive! 2018. “I’m looking forward to working with the vocational rehabilitation professionals, and workforce and technology leaders at getAwareLive! to come up with fresh and bold ideas that will accelerate work opportunities for people with disabilities.”

Following the keynote, Senator Harkin will announce the recipient of the Thomas Harkin Americans with Disabilities (THAD) Excellence Award. This annual award is given to an outstanding member of the vocational rehabilitation (VR) community, who has gone above and beyond in their service to people with disabilities.
